JNU protests had support of Hafiz Saeed, asserts Indian home minister

NEW DELHI: In a weird statement, Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said the ‘anti-national’ protests at Jawaharlal Nehru University had the support of Hafiz Saeed.

Indian police action at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi on Friday, including the arrest of the JNU students’ union president on charges of sedition, over a protest, was completely has been criticized worldwide. The protest was part of an event held on campus to commemorate the hanging of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat.

“It’s unfortunate that the JNU incident has been backed by Hafiz Saeed. Nation must also accept the reality that incident that took place in JNU, has been supported by Hafiz Saeed. This is unfortunate,” Singh said.

Speaking at a press conference in the national capital, Singh said his government would not spare anyone who dares to raise anti-national slogans.

“Have given clear instructions that strict action must be taken against anyone who’s found guilty, but innocent people must not be harassed,” Singh said, adding that “anyone who raises anti-India slogans or tries to put a question mark on national unity, will not be spared by this government.”
