Past in Perspective

“We don’t kill our people. No government in the world kills its people, unless it’s led by a crazy person.”
–Bashar al Assad, December 2011.

Ever since protests erupted in March 2011, Syria has been embroiled in a bloody civil war that has led to the deaths of over 250000 and has displaced 11 million more. The government, led by Bashar al Asad attempted to suppress the dissent by using force and only created more problems for itself. The conflict took a sectarian turn when the country’s Sunni majority formed armed militias against the Shia Alawite government and both sides received funds and arms from various global powers. With Russia, Iran and China supporting the government and the Sunni rebels supported by the West and Sunni majority countries such as Saudi Arabia, this proxy war shows no signs of ceasing until groups such as the Islamic State and the Al Qaeda Nusra front are driven out of the country and the government steps down.
