Agriculture: A neglected sector

Agriculture is the backbone of our economy in Pakistan, but it was not getting the required attention. Neglecting this sector has resulted into a decrease in the share of agriculture in the GDP. Our majority population is directly or indirectly related to this sector. It contributes about 24 % of the gross domestic product (GDP) and accounts for half of employed labour force. It is also the largest source of foreign exchange earnings. National development was impossible without improvements in agriculture sector, because agriculture provide jobs to majority of labour in Pakistan.

Our country cannot grow if it is does not take necessary measurement to improve the condition of this farmer. A financially strong farmer can only be able to grow his business and contribute to the growth of his country, like those of Australia, India, Bangladesh and China. The government should take immediate action on priority basis to make reforms in agriculture sector and give subsidy on fertilizer or feed crop. These effective reforms will prove to be milestones for the development of Pakistan.
