LAHORE - Lawyer of alleged rapist and serial killer Imran Ali on Tuesday withdrew his power of attorney after the suspect confessed to raping and killing nine minor girls including seven year old Zainab Amin of Kasur.

Coming out of Kot Lakhpat jail where an anti-terrorism court is holding trial of the suspect, Advocate Mehar Shakeel Multani told reporters that he was misled by the suspect.

Multani said he withdrew his power of attorney after the suspect gave confessional statement before the court.  “I can’t defend a criminal,” he said.

Earlier, during an eleven-hour long hearing, ATC-I Judge Sajjad Ahmad recorded statements of 16 more prosecution witnesses. According to a prosecution member, the cases would be decided on the basis of evidence despite confessional statement of the suspect.

The court has to decide the case within seven days as the Lahore High Court had ordered it conclude it within the given time. On Feb 09, police charged the murderer and rapist of seven-year old Kasur girl of serial killings of at least seven other minor girls , as young as five.

The high-powered joint investigation team submitted its 175-page findings report before Anti-Terrorism Court, and produced the handcuffed suspect Imran Ali before it amid tight security.

After thirteen days interrogation, Ali was charged with eight rape and execution-style murders that sparked countrywide outrage and brought international condemnation.

Police in “challan” (investigation report) included 55 witnesses and said that his DNA report matched with the seven cases apart from Zainab Amin case.  

Zainab Amin was abducted on January 04 from nearby her aunt’s house in Kasur where she was going to learn Quran. Her body was recovered from a heap of garbage near her house after year after of her abduction.
