A closed letter to the public

Mr Shahzad Khalil in his open letter to his Excellency President Asif Ali Zardari dated Jan 13, has urged the president to immediately order appointment of men of integrity, vision, qualifications and experience to head Pakistans key organisations like NHA, PIA, PSM, OGDC, PASSCO, CAA, Railways etc. This has reminded me of an incident when late Ghulam Hyder Wyne (may God bless his soul) the then CM Punjab was approached by a parliamentarian to appoint his relative on a key job. On this the late CM declined saying that all appointments would be made on merit only. The parliamentarian got annoyed and retorted Have you been made CM on merit? This closed letter of mine is for the consumption of public only that neither the President nor his kitchen cabinet to include the PM (barring a few exceptions) are in their positions on merit None of them fulfills the pre-requisites of article 62 and 63 of the constitution. We have a parliament where over 258 honourable members have fake or doubtful degrees. The law and home ministers have PhD degrees from unknown universities. With this set-up, the public should not get surprised to see matriculates as chairman OGDC or established corrupt people handling Haj operations. The booty is shared by all in cash or kind. There is nothing wrong in our system. All procedures are well thought out and transparent. But we have experts to play havoc with the systems and the popularly elected leaders to violate the rules and procedures. So I would request Mr Shahzad Khalil not to waste his energy in sending open letters as it would fall flat on the deaf ears of the rulers. One can see the recent appointment of new governor Punjab after the acceptance of 10 point agenda of Nawaz Sharif where the latter had categorically told the government not to appoint corrupt people on key posts and remove the existing corrupt people. But the government has to follow the policy of reconciliation in words only as directed by his Excellency Actions speak louder than words Mr Prime Minister. MUHAMMAD AZHAR KJHWAJA, Lahore, January 13.
