KARACHI - Sindh government has sought further three months period till April to complete the delimitation of the constituencies and make changes in the law before holding the Local Government elections.
The Sindh government’s new stance has further diminished the chances of the LG polls till April.
In this regard, Sindh Senior Minister for Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on Monday came up with a new stance of the provincial government, seeking further period of 90 days for holding the LG elections.
He claimed that his government did not want to escape from the LG elections but there was a need of minimum 90 days to bring changes in the LG law to make it more beneficial for the people, besides completing the process of delimitation.
Khuhro further said the schedule of the LG elections was previously made hurriedly. Such a gigantic exercise was administratively not possible in such a short span of time on January 18.
“A time period of 90 days or more, like it was given for the general elections, should be considered for the local bodies’ elections too to hold them in a befitting manner,” he emphasized. Keeping in view the current situation, the Sindh government will again request the Election Commission for new dates to hold the local bodies in the province.
He declared that finalising the date for the LG elections is prerogative of the provincial government as it will consult to the ECP soon.
He said the provincial government would not give up the suggestion to hold the LG elections on party basis.
