ISLAMABAD - Former Test spinner and chief selector, Iqbal Qasim Saturday, said Pakistan team needed to adapt to conditions and highly aggressive planning is required to bounce back from 3-0 loss against New Zealand and restore some pride.

Talking to The Nation, Qasim, who is also Hanif Muhammad High Performance Academy head at National Stadium Karachi, said: “Pakistan team badly need fresh planning and shift in team. Senior players completely failed in their role and head coach Micky Arthur after Christmas holidays lack innovation. He needs to revise his strategy and immediately make some much-needed changes in the squad.”

He said Pakistan batting line failed miserably, which is quite strange as these players were playing for quite some time and they must have shown more responsibility and seniors have to come up with performance. “Pakistan bowling is doing fair job but I still feel, the bowlers must provide breakthroughs up front. Until and unless taking early wickets and removing Black Caps top order early, their chances of win look highly bleak.”

“I strongly advice few changes in the team as New Zealand had witnessed same team in the three matches and now fresh planning and fresh faces are need of the hour. Sarfraz on the whole had performed well as captain but what can he do when team is not responding and losing so badly. I feel we have a great combination but for the time-being they are not clicking as a unit. The coach, team management and captain should sit together and devise plan to counter Kiwis, who are very much beatable and I feel, we had the ability.”

Qasim said Pakistan needed to win next two matches as it would give moral boost and help green caps in the T20 series against same opponents. “Off course, Pakistan team has not played for a long time and conditions in New Zealand are completely different, but now when they had three matches, they must settled own. Anyhow, winning or losing doesn’t mean and Pakistan are of striking back and it could be witnessed in the 4th match.”

He said batting was never team’s strength but for a period of time, batsmen were giving great starts and helping Pakistan team to pile up decent scores on the board. “Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Azhar Ali and Babar Azam must have to dig deep and ensure their stay at the crease. As long as they stay at the crease, runs are bound. Sarfraz and seniors should have sorted out things and discuss in detail where the team is lacking. Few changes could help the cause and it is only a matter of time, when Pakistan team will again start to deliver. As captain, Sarfraz has to be more aggressive and organise his troops well. He is not only motivational, but also enjoys huge respect among his players and his captaincy qualities will help team a great deal.”
