LAHORE – Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial on Friday issued contempt of court notices to the Punjab home secretary and inspector general of police (IGP) for defying judicial orders issued in connection with the promotion of four police inspectors.
Inspector Mussarat and three others have sought action against the Punjab home secretary and IGP for non-compliance with the court’s orders. They contended that the court had ordered the authorities concerned to send their names to the departmental promotion committee, but this was not done in clear defiance of the court’s orders.
The petitioners prayed to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the respondent public functionaries for not obeying its order. The court recorded their initial arguments and issued notices to the respondents for September 27.
Meanwhile, the LHC has been requested to disqualify PML-N MPA Jamil Asharf for having the nationality of the United States. Petitioner Nadeem has challenged the Punjab Assembly membership of Ashraf for having dual nationality.
He alleged that Ashraf also had the nationality of the United States besides Pakistan. “The person who takes oath of faithfulness under the US Constitution cannot be loyal to Pakistan,” the petitioner added. MPA Jamil Ashraf did not fulfil the criteria laid down in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution of Pakistan, thus he should be disqualified as member of the Punjab Assembly, Nadeem held.
