ISLAMABAD – Despite tall claims to expand Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS), the management has failed to expand the hospital’s emergency unit.
The administration spent a large sum of money on the opening of a courtesy centre for VIPs within a few days but is least concerned about the sufferings of poor patients at the emergency unit and other departments since passing of eight years in this regard.
Around 600 to 700 patients are provided treatment at the hospital’s emergency unit daily and most of the cases are accident victims.
It has been informed that a large number of emergency cases are treated by around five to six doctors, including medical officers and postgraduate trainees.
Nurses, security staff and even senior deputy executive director are being assigned to perform duties in the emergency were ignorant of managing the cases in a proactive manner.
The management had been informed on a number of times about the congested space but there were always promises and no concrete action during the last two years.
Emergency room is very much congested and during the last few days several serious patients suffering from heart ailments etc., were even given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the floor because there was no bed available.
Even a few accident patients needing emergency care were kept waiting for several hours because of the congested space, said a visitor.
It is pertinent to mention that Pims expansion project needs sheer attention as due to less space, patients are suffering thick and thin.
