Authorities decide to detain Maryam in Adiala Jail: Sources

Islamabad administration has withdrawn the notification of moving Maryam Nawaz Sharif to Sihala rest house.

According to the sources, the authorities have decided to keep both Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif at Adiala Jail for now.

Earlier, Ministry of Law and Justice on Friday ordered to conduct trial of remaining two references against the Sharif family filed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Adiala Jail.

The notification states, "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (b) of section 16 of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 (XVIII of 1999), the federal government is please to specify the Central Jail Adiala, Rawalpindi, to be the place where the Accountability Court-I, Islamabad shall sit for trial of References No. 18/2017 and 19/2017 against Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and others."

Prior to that, on July 6, the Accountability Court convicted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retired) Mohammad Safdar Awan in the Avenfield properties reference.

On the other hand, Nawaz's sons, Hassan and Hussain, have been absconding and were declared 'proclaimed offenders' in the case.

Nawaz and his sons, Hussain and Hasan, are accused in all three references whereas Maryam and Safdar were accused in the Avenfield reference only.

After the Accountability Court's verdict in pertaining to Avenfield references, the remaining two references are related to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, and offshore companies, including Flagship Investment Limited.

Earlier, on July 12, the Accountability Court judge rejected the petition to transfer the Al-Azizia corruption reference to another judge.

On July 13, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam were arrested by NAB officials upon their arrival in Lahore on and shifted to Islamabad on a chartered flight. A NAB team took Nawaz and Maryam in custody from the aircraft, while officials of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) confiscated their passports.

Then afterwards, from the new Islamabad International Airport, the two were taken to the Adiala Jail in separate armoured personnel carriers escorted by police convoys.
