FIA bid to arrest ex-PM remains inconclusive

Gilani says going to appear in Karachi court

MULTAN - A team of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) led by an Assistant Director made a half-hearted attempt to arrest former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani from his Multan residence but remained unsuccessful as the staff of the Gillani House told the team that he was not at home.
Gillani House sources said that the team had arrest warrants but it did not have search warrants and therefore it returned from the door.
Talking to The Nation, former premier Gilani expressed strong reaction on FIA’s attempt and declared that he was going to appear before the court in Karachi and if anyone wanted to arrest him, he would have the opportunity there. “They cannot arrest terrorists. Former Chief Justice’s son publicly said that he did not know any NAB or FIA. There are hundreds of verdicts of Supreme Court in different cases but no one bothered to implement them. We are the only ones whom they are always ready to overrun,” he lamented. He said that he had already declared during a press conference that Karachi was his birthplace and he would appear before the court whatsoever.
A Federal Anti-Corruption Court (FACC) had issued non-bailable arrest warrants of five accused including former PM Yousuf Raza Gillani and former commerce minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim in seven cases concerning the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) scam on June 2. Earlier, an anti-corruption court had also issued non-bailable arrest warrants of Gilani and Amin Fahim on May 29. Both the PPP stalwarts are facing the charges of misappropriation of huge funds.
