UN vehicle snatched in Karachi

KARACHI - Unknown outlaws snatched a double-cabin vehicle of the United Nations (UN) from the precincts of Azizabad police station.
Police said at least two armed men intercepted the vehicle near Makkah Chowk, Azizabad, and snatched it from the two employees of the UN at gunpoint. They also took the UN staffers with them, but dropped both of them at Five Star Chowrangi, North Nazimabad.
No case has so far been registered. SHO Irfan Asif, however, said checking had been enhanced across the city to trace the culprits.
COP SHOT DEAD, SEVERAL OUTLAWS HELD: A cop was gunned down in an act of target killing while two brothers and a young man were wounded in two explosions on Friday.
A police head constable, Muhammad Aslam, 35, was shot dead in an act of target killing in Orangi Town within the limits of Mominabad police station. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. According to police, the deceased was returning home from his job when armed motorcyclists shot him dead. SHO Shahzad said the members of a banned outfit were responsible for his killing.
Separately, a man was injured when a mysterious explosion took place inside his house located in the outskirts of Shah Latif locality. The injured was identified as Junaid Alam. SHO Naeem Khan said the police had apprehended the injured and his friend Ashraf. He said Alam was injured in a tennis ball bomb explosion.
Similarly, two brothers were injured in a cracker blast in Cheel Chowk area of Lyari in the limits of Kalakot police station. Police officials said five-year-old Shahjahan and seven-year-old Rehan were playing with a cracker bomb after finding it in a garbage dump when the explosion occurred. The two children were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi, for medical treatment, where their condition was stated to be out of danger.
Meanwhile, eight suspects, including a couple, were arrested during various raids in different parts of the city on Friday.
The couple was arrested by Citizens-Police Liaisons Committee (CPLC) for their alleged involvement in demanding extortion money. The CPLC members and Special Investigation Unit jointly conducted a raid in Aurangabad, Nazimabad, and arrested Mansoor Ali and his wife.
CPLC Chief Ahmed Chinoy said one Ahmed Ghauri informed the CPLC of the threatening calls by them, adding the accused also threatened him of dire consequences if he failed to pay them the extortion money. He said during initial investigation, the couple confessed to the crime.
Two suspected militants were apprehended during a raid, conducted by rangers in Mujahid Colony area of Nazimabad on a tip-off. The suspects have been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
Pak Colony police arrested one Murtaza and recovered weapons from his possession. Reportedly, the police stopped him and his accomplice during a routine checking, but he opened fire. He was injured in exchange of fire and arrested. His accomplice, however, managed to escape under the cover of firing.
In another incident, two suspects allegedly involved in land grabbing were arrested during a raid in Surjani locality. The suspects were identified as Naeem and Zaheer Qureshi. Police said Zeeshan and Arsalan were also arrested on the information provided by them. All the four accused were involved in land grabbing, murders and kidnappings for ransom.
