LAHORE - Punjab government has proposed Rs13.06 billion for Local Government and Community Development Department for the financial year of 2016-17.

The development budget proposal is Rs4.5b and non-development is Rs1.22b. The Capital A/c-1 in the proposal is Rs7.33b.

The total budget allocated for the department for financial year of 2015-16 financial was Rs3.73 billion.

Targets and major initiatives fixed for 2016-17 include: Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Project Phase-II, Improvement of Conditions of the Public Graveyards, Establishment of Model Graveyard (Shehr-e-Khamoshan), Preservation and Restoration of Lahore Fort and Construction of Union Council Buildings in Punjab.

The other projects under new fiscal include: Construction of flyover at Kacha Jail Road, Lahore, Provision of Sewerage System for Union Council 117, 118 and 120 Lahore, Replacement of Outlived, deeper and Inadequate Water Supply lines with HDPE Pipes, Lahore (Gastro Phase-II), Lahore, Construction of RCC Conduit Sewer from Shaukat Khanum Hospital Chowk to Sattu Katla Drain, Lahore, Retoration of Original Cross Section of Sattu Katla Drain from Ferozpur Road to Peco Road, Lahore, Rehabilitation of Airport Road from Ammar Chowk to Karal Chowk, Rawlpindi and Rehabilitation/Improvement of Rawal Road from Airport Road to Chandni Chowk, Rawlpindi.

The department is planning Waste Management companies in six more cities - Gujranwala, Sialkot, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Bahawalpur - under 2016-17 fiscal.

An amount of Rs286.5b will be transferred under Provincial Finance Commission Award for utilising the same for the local government. However the Award will be put in action after establishment of local governments.

According to budget white-paper, the achievements made during 2015-16 fiscal were Model Cattle Markets at Sheikhupura and Faisalabad, elimination of 37 ponds from major villages of Punjab, developing 36 multi-purpose parks and grounds on reclaimed lands of ponds and constructed boundary walls of 25 graveyards.

The other projects completed during 2015-16 fiscal include: Elimination of Sewerage Inlets in Lahore Branch Canal from Harbanspura Interchange Lahore Ring Road to BRB Canal, Extention of Water Resources for Faisalabad City (Phase-I), Replacement of Outlived/Rusted Pipelines in Faisalabad (Gastro Package-II), Water Supply Distribution Network in Gujranwala city, Replacement of Outlived Pipelines in Gujranwala, Widening of Double Road from Murree Road to Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, Sewerage, Drainage, and Waste Water Treatment System in Rawalpindi and Up-Gradation/Rehabilitation of Rawal Lake Filtration Plant, Rawalpindi.
