LAHORE - A seven-year-old girl was battling for life at a hospital in Lahore on Tuesday, a day after she was sexually assaulted and found abandoned at a house in City Raiwind police precincts.

The parents shifted the victim to a hospital in Lahore on a private car as rescue workers and police failed to respond to the situation on time. The girl was admitted to the Mian Munshi Hospital but she was not provided medical treatment the whole night there because the police did not provide record of the case to the hospital’s administration.

A police officer late Tuesday told reporters that the alleged rapist was arrested by police during a successful raid in Pattoki, district Kasur. The child rapist was named by police as 25-year-old Ghulam Mustafa, who was a teacher at the religious seminary.

The victim was a student at the same religious school, according to her father. The police registered a criminal case under section 376 of the PPC against the local cleric Ghulam Mustafa on the complaint of her father and launched the investigation.

The father of the victim told the police that the teacher took her daughter to his house where she was sexually abused. The religious school is located near the house of the victim. As usual, the child visited the school for religious education on Monday afternoon but did not return. “We started searching her in the area,” the father said. “Later, we found the child at the house of the teacher who fled instantly after committing the crime.”

The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. A police investigator said the child was lying unconscious and bleeding when her parents reached the spot. The condition of the victim was said to be serious till late Tuesday night.

The Raiwind’s Assistant Superintendent of Police said that the suspect was arrested by police on Tuesday evening. He said that the police were investigating the case and the culprit would be brought to justice.  The alleged rapist is also said to be a relative of the victim. However, father of the child said that he was being forced by his relatives to withdraw the rape case but he would go to any extent to bring the culprit to justice. (The names and address of the victims are deliberately withheld).

In another incident, an eight year old boy was sexually assaulted by unknown men near a farmhouse in the Raiwind area. Police said that the boy was coming back after delivering lunch to his father at a local factory when he was abducted by unknown men. They took him to the fields and fled after leaving the boy in unconscious condition. The child was shifted to a hospital and the police were investigating the incident.  The incidents of child rape and murder are not rare in this province. A five-year-old girl was found murdered in Muridkay while a six-year-old girl was murdered after being raped in Zafarwall on Monday. The Punjab police are investigating both the incidents with no arrests made yet.
