ISLAMABAD - The government Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment to continue its plans for modernizing the country's armed forces and strengthening their capabilities to overcome the internal and external challenges. Minister for Defence Ch Ahmad Mukhtar made these remarks during a meeting with the Chief of Army Staff , General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The Minister said it was the policy of the present Govt to maintain minimum credible deterrence, essential for safeguarding the national frontiers. The COAS informed the Minister about the requirements, future development plans and operational preparedness of the Armed Forces of the country. The Minister said the Govt was well aware of the requirements of the Armed Forces and would take all necessary steps to fulfil their needs and strengthen their defence capabilities. The Minister appreciated the steps taken by the COAS for the welfare of the soldiers. He said the Got would provide all necessary resources for the welfare of the soldiers as initiated by COAS after declaring year 2008 "as year of the soldier." Agencies add: COAS General Kayani while addressing 1st conference of Subedar Major at General Headquarters gave out his vision and concept of these new appointments at various tiers of command. He said the purpose of this appointment was to provide a considered and experienced input in matters related to welfare, training, morale and administration at decision making level, through close interface with soldiers on matters which are better understood by those with personal experience and requisite service background. Later, the COAS interacted informally with the subedars and majors and shared views on matters of professional interest.
