KARACHI - The opposition members in the city councils continued boycotting the councils' session and this time they boycotted on the issue of May 12 when their resolution did not allowed to be tabled. The session presided over by Naib City Nazim Nasreen Jalil on Tuesday, was marked with the uproar and disturbance as majority of the members were involved chanting slogans and thumping desks. City Council in its session has adopted resolution to hand over the Lines Area Parking Plaza to Karachi Development Company Limited (KDCL), to resolve its financial issue and complete the project. While the opposition members had boycotted the session after they were not allowed to present their resolution regarding the initiating probe on May 12, 2007 carnage. The council had accepted four resolutions including the change of land use for the four plots located on Shaheed-e-Millat Road, rescheduling of chairlift fee installed in Safari Park, incorporating shopkeepers as tenants of city government and handing over the multi-storey car parking plaza constructed on 4386-square-yard to a private firm, KDCL. The resolution was forwarded by Nadeem Hashmi and said the work on this seven-storey parking plaza was initiated by the city government but it was slowed due to financial issues. In order to complete this project on priority basis, it has been decided to hand over this project to KDCL to generate the funds and complete the project. The project will have the parking facility for 700 cars and 500 motorcycles at a time, he said. Earlier, as the proceedings were started, the opposition members demanded that their resolution regarding the May 12 incident should be tabled but the convenor had not allowed. In the resolution, the opposition members had asked government to probe the incident and the role of police on that day should be highlighted. The convenor asked the house to show democratic attitude on this resolution as treasury members who were continuously making noises had ignored this which had aggravated the opposition members. Abdul Jalil from treasury benches had pointed the performance of government and said they had obtained power to resolve inflation and other major issues but during the last 42 days of new government no concrete measures have been taken. He also mentioned that the fuel prices are decreasing in the neighbouring country. Nasreen mentioned that she had no authority to issue funds for the union councils as her task is only to convey the message to the city nazim. He (city nazim) had assured me that the opposition UCs will be issued funds as city government has started receiving funds, she said. At one point, Saifuddin from opposition benches, on a point of order, had once again recalled the incidents of May 12 and also highlighted the negative role of police. The treasury members had not allowed him to continue his speech as they were shouting slogans. Later they boycotted the session. The convenor had adjourned the session till May 19.
