Mr Mansoorul Haque Solangi in his letter has rightly pointed out the previous regimes' pattern of playing with the statistics. The most serious damage Messrs Shaukat Aziz and co did to the economy was essentially on this count. In order to present a better performance in the poverty alleviation that they reduced the rate of population growth from 2.98 to 2 percent in one go. With that big cut not only rate of poverty came down from 32 to 25 percent but rate of GNP also reflected an improved picture. The economic crises, which the incumbent government is now braving, are mainly on account of non-availability of proper statistical data. -DR. ALI AKBAR M. DHAKAN, Karachi, via e-mail, April 27.
