Principal alma in capital

The current state of affairs at the Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad is in need of urgent attention from the Minister of Education and all those who care for the cause of education in Pakistan. A simple visit to the campus of this so-called leading university of the country is enough to show why. The totally rundown condition of the premises amply reflects the inefficiency of those at the helm of affairs. A casual interaction with the faculty and students will show the general mismanagement and trend towards violation of rules in all administrative matters. Recently there have been cases of harassment of very senior and internationally renowned female faculty and one of them actually reported the matter to police after the university administration failed to take any action. Now this teacher is being pressurized by the university officials to withdraw charges. The matter of appointment of teachers is another area of concern as there have been several cases where favourites have either been appointed or promoted in total violation of rules governing these matters. Through the courtesy of these columns, I request the HEC and Ministry of Education to look into these matters urgently in order to save QAU from total destruction. -SIFWAT ALI, Islamabad, via e-mail, May 4.
