UAF, ICT team up to boost agri sector

FAISALABAD
The National Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Research and Development Fund and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad will work together in the area of research keeping in view the importance of information technology in agriculture sector.
It was discussed at a meeting held between ICT R&D Fund Solicitation and Evaluation General Manger Ahmad Afzal and UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad here the other day.
On the occasion, Ahmad Afzal said that the time had come to reap the benefit of technological advancement to excel the economy. By using modern technology, the agriculture can be boosted manifold. He said they were focusing on industry-academia partnership with the help of funding concrete development and research initiatives. He said emerging information and knowledge era was opening new economic and social development through information and communication technologies.
The UAF VC said that precision agriculture had gained popularity across the globe, enabling the countries to reduce cost of production with balanced inputs usage through information technology, Geographical Information System and Space Technology. He said that keeping in view, the increasing population, boost in per acre production was vital to ensure food security. He said that the information technology had made the world global village. Talking about research, the VC said that external research portfolio of the country had touched to Rs2 billion.
