LAHORE - The federal government has constituted a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe into the Model Town tragedy, police sources revealed on Thursday.

The investigation team consists of officers from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Military Intelligence (MI), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and police department.

A senior officer told The Nation that the JIT is headed by DIG Abdul Razzaq Cheema who is currently serving in Quetta.

The JIT will investigate the Model Town case lodged against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and 19 others including four federal ministers.

It was also learnt that DIG Abdul Razzaq Cheema would reach Lahore within a day or two to lead the investigation team.

The representatives of ISI, MI, and IB are also nominated as the JIT members, a source said but declined to give further details because of the sensitivity of the matter.  Earlier, the Punjab police department had suggested the provincial government to constitute a new joint investigation team (JIT) to probe into the Model Town tragedy.

A police crackdown at Minhajul Quran Secretariat had left at least 14 people shot dead and scores of others injured on June 17, 2014. Before this, a JIT constituted by the provincial home department had investigated the first FIR (No 510/14) registered against the PAT leaders and activists on the application of police.

The second JIT will probe into the second FIR (696/14) lodged against PM, CM, ministers, and others on the application of Minhajul Quran administration.

PAT REJECTS JIT

Pakistan Awami Tehreek President Dr Raheeq Abbasi has rejected the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) for the Model Town tragedy.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, he claimed that there was no member of the MI in the JIT, besides the head of the JIT was inner circle member of the ruling family who would only give clean chit to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

He said that government never contacted PAT leadership regarding the formulation of JIT and PAT had already rejected the name of Abdul Razzaq Cheema in the JIT. He said that cruelty at Model Town tragedy was committed by the police and how could police remain impartial in the investigation.

He said that PAT would accept a JIT enjoying confidence of martyrs heirs and PAT leadership. He alleged that earlier JIT by the government was already rejected by the nation. He said that PAT had already made it clear that JIT head should be taken from a province which remained impartial in the incident.

Raheeq said that government had rejected the names of three KPK police officers suggested by PAT, while the name of a police officer Shahid Hayat from Karachi was also rejected. He warned that no PAT leader or worker would cooperate with the JIT.
