Swat: Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif today arrived in Barikot, area of Swat to review post-quake relief activities carried out in the area.

On the occasion, the premier was briefed on the damages caused by the calamity and the ongoing relief measures at the Governor House. He has also met the quake sufferers.

Addressing the media after reviewing relief activities, the Prime Minister stated the federal government will extend full support to local administration in quake relief activities. He said that the whole country is sad over the loss of lives in recent earthquake.

Under the package, Rs 600,000 will be given to the family of each deceased and Rs 100,000 to each injured person. Similarly, Rs 200,000 will be given to the one who lost his limb or any other body part in the disaster.

The Prime Minister said that Rs 200,000 would also be given for the construction of completely damaged houses, while Rs 100,000 each for the partially damaged houses.

He further distributed cheques to the victims, so that they can rebuild their houses. Nawaz Sharif lauded the national and provincial disaster management authorities, KP government and Pak Army for immediately carrying out smooth relief operation.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited the earthquake-hit towns of Shangla and Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where at least 49 people were killed and 80 injured.

Talking to the quake affected people during his visit to Shangla and other areas, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak said relief operation is in full swing in the affected parts of the province to minimize sufferings of the masses.

He said relief goods have been sent to all the affected areas. He directed the officers of health department to provide best available medical facilities to all the injured. CM Khattak said the provincial government is planning to strictly implement building construction code to avert such losses in future.

At the moment, confirmed death toll across Pakistan is more than 250 with nearly 1,700 people injured, and authorities warn that the number could spike with many isolated regions still cut off.

People were reported to be running out of food in many remote areas, with children and the elderly helping to dig through piles of rubble for survivors as they waited for aid to arrive.

The military has been leading rescue efforts, sending in medical teams, tents and rations and evacuating some people by helicopter.
