ISLAMABAD Hundreds of activists of Pakistan WAPDA Hydro-Electric Central Labour Union and Capital Development Authoritys (CDAs) Labour Union on Wednesday staged a massive protest demonstration here in front of National Press Club against dissolution of Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO), price-hike and increase in power tariff. Holding placards and banners inscribed with different slogans, a well-turned gathering of the activists of both labour unions protested for well over an hour and chanted anti-government slogans, while leaders of the unions also delivered speeches on the occasion. Protesters in strong words criticised and opposed, what they called, the unwise decision of the Ministry of Water & Power to abolish PEPCO and granting autonomy to four power distribution companies included Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad and Multan in the country. The labours were led by Mian Rehman Ghani Regional Chairman Pakistan WAPDA Hydro-Electric Central Labour Union, Regional Secretary Javed Iqbal Bloch, Malik Fateh Khan, Ramzan Jadoon, General Secretary Pakistan Workers Federation Northern Punjab Zahoor Awan, General Secretary CDA Labour Union Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin and other. Speakers on the occasion threatened that if the Government did not revert the decision of abolition of PEPCO, then labour union workers across the country would boycott the Government and cut the electricity supply to the whole country. Speakers said the steps taken by the Ministry would destroy WAPDA, increase the miseries of the people and badly affect the already declining national economy. They said that political interference in the recruitment process had already destroyed this profitable organisation. The demanded of the Government to take steps to construct new hydropower stations to generate cheap electricity for the economic development of the country. The labourers leaders also expressed concern on the deteriorating law and order situation, sky rocketing price hike and growing unemployment and demanded of the Government for initiating measures on war footing bases to the resolve these problems.
