TAIPEI (AFP) - Two Taiwanese fighter jets carrying three pilots lost contact with their base during a night mission Tuesday, the defence ministry said, as local media reported they might have crashed into a mountain. An RF-5 surveillance aircraft and a double-seated F-5F trainer disappeared from radar screens during a training mission, 13 minutes after they took off at 7:39 pm (1139 GMT) from an airbase in Hualien, eastern Taiwan, defence ministry spokesman David Lo said. The ministry has ordered an airborne search, he said, declining to speculate on the possible cause of the accident. The CTI cable news network cited witnesses as reporting that they saw a massive fire on a mountain.
