ISLAMABAD Pakistan number 14 Nasir Iqbal overwhelmed Pakistan number four Mansoor Zaman 3-1 in the second quarter-final of the ongoing 8th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Squash Championship here at Mushaf Squash Complex on Wednesday. The final score-line was 1-11, 11-9, 11-8, 8-11 and 11-6. It was second upset win by Nasir, who ousted high-ranked Waqar Mehboob 3-1 day before yesterday at same venue, however, Nasirs sparkling performance amazed the hand full of squash lovers who were enjoying the crucial encounter of the championship at the court number six of Mushaf Squash Complex. Mansoor Zaman started the game with bang by scoring nine points in the first game without conceding a single point. He did not allow his rival to settle his feet in the court and kept him on his heels during the first game that finished 11-1. After losing the first game, Nasir changed his strategy after getting some tips from his seniors. Nasir played powerful strokes and classic drop shorts in the second game. The game went neck-to-neck till 9-9. Nasir concentrated on his game and played a couple of remarkable strokes to win the game at 11-9 and levelled the match 1-1. Nasir could not maintain the same pace in the earlier stage of the third game and went down 6-8 as his experienced opponent Mansoor was doing well. But, Nasir bounced back in the game by scoring five back-to-back points to end the game at 11-8. Nasir got the lead in the match 2-1 after three games. Pakistan No four Mansoor squared the match 2-2 by winning penultimate the game 11-8. Despite looking a bit tired, Mansoor won the game by using unusual tactics against an inexperienced challenger. Both the players were not taking any risk and playing defensive game. In the final game, Nasir gained vital lead of two points at the start. He was ahead 2-0, 4-2, 6-4 and finally showed door to Mansoor Zaman at 11-6 by hitting powerful strokes. Mansoor hit the tin twice in a row which helped Nasir achieve the lead at decisive stages of the last game. Besides Nasir Iqbal, top seed Aamir Atlas Khan, Yasir Butt and Farhan Mehboob also entered the semi-finals. Semi-final will be played on Thursday (today). Nasir will meet Aamir Atlas. Earlier, in the WISPA competitions, Maria Toor, Saima Shoukat, Rushna Mehbbob and Moqaddas Ashraf also moved to the semi-final of the championship by beating their rivals.
