LAHORE – Chung police gunned down an alleged robber in what police claimed an ‘encounter’ at a police picket near Thokar Niaz Baig on Saturday. Police have removed the body to the City morgue for autopsy. The deceased person was identified as Haider Ali, a resident of Vehari. Police investigators said that the deceased had been currently living in Manga Mundi area. A police officer said that they had mounted a routine picket near Thokar Niaz Baig and were checking every vehicle passing through that route. Meantime, a rickshaw came there and policemen signaled the rickshaw driver to stop for routine checking. According to their statement, the rickshaw driver ignored the signal and tried to escape from the scene. “We chased him over which he opened firing on policemen and fled towards the parking of Metro Shopping Center,” a police officer said, on the condition of anonymity. He said that policemen kept on chasing and opened firing on him as a retaliatory act. Resultantly, he received multiple bullet injuries on his arm.

 Later, he was taken to the Jinnah Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Police claimed to have recovered two pistols, cell phones and instruments used to cut locks form his possession. SP Athar Waheed told media men that the policemen had asked the accused person to surrender but he opened firing on cops.
