LAKKI MARWAT - The growers of Baistkhel, Gandi Khankhel, Paharkhel Thall and other villages have warned that they will launch a protest movement if the availability of water is not ensured in Qasooria canal within 48 hours.

In an emergency meeting held here on Saturday at the residence of former tehsil nazim and head of Jamat-e-Islami political and public affairs wing Anwar Hayat Khan, Ihsanullah Khan and other farmers’ leaders said that the farmers and owners of the lands situated on the tail end lacked sufficient water in the canal for irrigation purpose.

They said the area farmers suffered huge losses, besides the crops were badly affected due to non-availability of water in the canal. “We are crying for water in the canal since the last couple of years but no one bothered to pay heed to our genuine demand,” they maintained.

They said that damages caused by scarcity of water in the canal, to the crops had become intolerable for them.

They told that the non-availability of water in the canal was rapidly transforming their fertile lands into barren, saying that the growers of the area cannot suffer losses and damages anymore.

The farmers also formed a 38-member committee to take up the matter with relevant quarters and demanded through a unanimously adopted resolution to ensure availability of water in Qasooria canal till April 16.

Meanwhile, the office bearers of All Irrigation Patwarian Association have demanded of the government to upgrade the posts of patwaris of Irrigation Department.

In a statement, the association’s Bannu circle president Mehboob Shah and other said that the patwaris of irrigation department should be given powers to tackle the cases of abyana recovery on spot.

They said that patwaris had no powers to initiate on spot action against the defaulters of abyana.

They demanded that the posts of patwaris of irrigation department should be upgraded to BPS-9, saying that the privilege has already been extended to the patwaris of revenue department.
