BAHAWALNAGAR

It seems the rampant corruption has diminished the ‘courage and will’ of the police force to protect its integrity and public image as institution to say the least. There are various incidents occurred in different parts of Bahawalnagar in the past, wherein personnel of the district police had to face ‘retreat’ at the hands of criminals who attacked the raiding cops and got released their arrested accomplices.

Such an incident took place in Chak Toba Balochan in Chishtian circle police last week.  According to details, acting on a tip-off, the Shehr Farid Police officials conducted a raid on a tube-well owned by Faiz Rasool to arrest two killer-cum-dacoits identified as Shabir and Javed. The accused had killed a youth namely Safarish Ali and left his father Mohammad Ali critically injured when they put up resistance and foiled their attempt to steal their goats. The accused managed to escape from the scene and holed up in Toba Balochan.

Initially the police raided the spot and arrested both the accused but in the meanwhile their several accomplices attacked and overpowered the police while freeing their ‘caught accomplices.’ The armed accused also resorted to firing, leaving two cops - SI Siddique Sabri and Constable Rizwan and two villagers Ghulam Mustafa and Pervez critically injured. The accused made good their (second) escape on the same day. The police returned with two injured ‘cops’ and registered two cases - one case no 98/14 under Section 302 for the murder of Safarish Ali while the other case no 99/14 under Sections 353, 224, 225, 215, 148, 149 against 20 assailants out of which 10 nominated and 10 unidentified accused.

In another such incident that jeering at the district police, occurred when armed cops suffered bitter taste of the ‘deteriorating condition of law and order.’ As per the details, a heavy police contingent headed by Sub Inspector Javed Iqbal chased the bandits, who killed a woman and left one person injured on the same day. All of sudden, the police party ‘reportedly’ was welcomed by outlaws firing near Sheli Garbi. The outlaws, lie in wait in standing wheat crop field, ambushed the police party.

However, the cops survived the attack by lying down, while one of the robbers got injured with the firing of his own accomplices. Later, police got the injured into custody and shifted him to DHQ Hospital Bahawalnagar. A case 123/14 U/S 353/324/186 against three accused was also registered.
