LAHORE - Pakistan Young Pharmacist Association has demanded Prime Minister intervene and implement his decision on withdrawal of 30 per cent increase in the prices of important drugs, mostly life saving.

Addressing a press conference here at Lahore Press Club on Monday, President PYPA Dr Nabeela Latif and other office bearers demanded action against pharmaceutical companies for unilaterally increasing price of medicines and their facilitators sitting in Drug Regulatory Authority Pakistan (DRAP).

“Prime Minister directed withdrawal of notification regarding increase in drug prices on November 27, 2013. Multinational companies ignored PM directions and increased the prices of hundreds of drugs. Total impact is 30% increase in medicine prices in the market”, Dr Nabeela Latif said, adding, mafia at DRAP was befooling political bosses and allowing pharma companies to fleece the suffering humanity.

“The medicine prices are almost double in Pakistan in the region as compared to India, China and Bangladesh. Indian Government has recently reduced the prices of 886 off patent medicines up to 74.53% in the interest of poor patients. Multinational companies have closed their raw material factories in Pakistan and shifted to India e.g. Glaxo has shifted its unit from Ferozepur Road Lahore to India in 1994.

The multinational companies are charging very high price of medicine in Pakistan without spending even a single rupee on R&D in Pakistan”, she said, adding, it was consequence of illegalities at DRAP.

She urged PM to take notice of gross violation of rules at DRAP and take measures to make it a patient friendly body.
