ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Saturday decided to forward names of its three nominees each for the next caretaker set-up at the federal and Punjab level.

The party’s senior leadership meeting chaired by PTI chief Imran Khan at Bani Gala decided that PTI Vice-Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi will meet with the Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah to discuss the three names of the PTI nominees for the caretaker prime minister, said PTI Secretary Information Fawad Chaudhry.

He said that the names would be forwarded after a discussion with other opposition parties. He refused to disclose the names at this stage.

Similarly, the meeting decided that PTI leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed would forward the names of three nominees for the next caretaker chief minister to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Rasheed would first discuss the names with other opposition parties.

Under the Constitution, the prime minister or the chief minister of the province concerned has to finalize the names of the caretaker prime minister and interim chief minister in consultation with the leader of the opposition concerned.

The top PTI leadership remained tight-lipped over the names finalized by the party. According to a senior PTI leader, individuals of utmost integrity from the judiciary and the bureaucracy had been shortlisted by the party.

Fawad Chaudhry said that Khursheed Shah had also contacted the PTI to discuss the next caretaker set-up. He said that in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, where the PTI is in the power and in Punjab, where it holds the opposition leader’s slot, the party has a constitutional role to finalize the names of the caretaker set-up.

He said that the meeting also discussed that the PTI would formally kick off its general election campaign by holding a “massive” rally in Lahore on April 29.

He also told the media about the details of a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board held soon after the senior party leaders’ meeting.

He said that so far the party’s parliamentary board has received over 2000 online applications from ticket aspirants from across the country. He said that the party has decided that May 4 would be the final deadline to accept online applications. “The delimitation process will conclude on May 3," he said adding a huge response had been received from Punjab followed by KP.

He said that the PTI expected to conclude the process of finalizing party ticket-holders by the end of May.

To a question about seat adjustment with the PPP in some constituencies in Punjab, Chaudhry said that “it would be like committing political suicide for the PTI”. He said that the PTI would contest in each and every constituency.

He said that the ticket-awarding process had been divided into phases. The first list included names of party candidates from constituencies where PTI has a stronghold and there was no dispute on party candidates who would contest 2018 general election. The second list included constituencies where multiple PTI candidates were aspiring for tickets. They would be summoned for interviews, he said.

Replying a question, he said delectables were joining the PTI because they know the “party was coming to power following 2018 elections”. "More people will join us in coming days," he said.

Replying a question about Maryam Nawaz's statement regarding Imran Khan and PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari, he said that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Zardari always helped each other in the past and “they were like brothers”.

He said that PTI supported the actions and decisions of the apex court.

He said that he feared that the PML-N would become a non-entity like the MQM in the future. He claimed that the PTI did not vote for the PPP candidate for the Senate deputy chairman but “voted for Balochistan alliance”.

Meanwhile, another three potential electables including a PML-N MNA announced to join the PTI.

PML-N MNA from Sheikhupura Bilal Ahmed Virk announced to join the PTI after a meeting with Imran Khan at Bani Gala.

He reposed his full confidence in the leadership of Khan while criticized PML-N leadership saying, “they had disgraced the parliament and state institutions”.

A former PML-Q MPA and a confidant of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Chaudhry Zaheerud Din Khan and PML-N’s Nasir Musazia, who was a runner-up candidate from NA-4 in 2013 general election, also announced to join the PTI on Saturday.
