PALANDRI - At least 22 people died and about two dozen others injured when a bus carrying participants of a wedding ceremony fell into a gorge here on Sunday.

Police said that a bus carrying about five dozen attendants of a wedding party from Palandri to Hajira area of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) skidded off road due to overspeeding while negotiating a sharp turn near Janjaal Hill Morr and plunged into a deep ravine.

As a result of the accident 22 people died while about 25 others were reported injured, some of them seriously.

The dwellers of the area and rescue teams soon after getting the information of the mishap reached the scene and started the rescue operation.

The bodies and injured were pulled out from the gorge and shifted to different hospitals where according to hospital sources condition of several wounded people was critical and it was feared that the death toll could mount further.“A bus (was) carrying around 50 people, who were going to attend a wedding ceremony, from Palandari to Hajira when it fell into a ravine,” local police chief Hassan Qayum told AFP. “At least 22 people have died while 29 others are injured, six of whom are in (a) critical condition,” he added.

The bride and groom were not on the bus, local senior official Ibrar Azam told AFP.

The country has one of the world’s worst records for fatal traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
