While answering the questions in Rajya Sabha on December 2, 2009, Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram said that India would withdraw a significant number of security personnel from Jammu and Kashmir. After the meeting of US President with the Indian PM in Washington last week, the decision to withdraw from Jammu and Kashmir is a significant move in this longstanding dispute. It is obvious that the US President is keen to solve the Kashmir issue and it is actually he who has forced India to change tacks on its policy about Kashmir. If the government of India fulfills its promise to withdraw a significant number of its troops, it would certainly be a move to change the life of the poor Kashmiris. History shows India has never fulfilled its promises on Kashmir. That is why this issue has been lingering in the UN from 62 years. -ZAHID RASHID, Rawalpindi, December 11.
