LAHORE-Without naming Mian Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer said on Monday that all hue and cry over distribution of powers between the president and the prime minister was due to the third term. Addressing a function held at Governors House in connection with PPPs 43rd foundation day, Taseer said that distribution of powers between the PM and the president was no issue as both belonged to the same party and there was no discord between them over any matter. The actual problem, he added, was that of third term of the prime minister, and this was the main reason behind the hue and cry over 17th amendment. He said President Zardari was ready to surrender his powers to the Parliament, as he wielded his real power from the party he was heading at the moment. President Zardari is neither Ghulam Ishaq Khan nor Farooq Leghari, but a Co-chairman of countrys biggest political party and a symbol of federation, he said, adding, Asif Zardari had said last year that next president would be a jiala like Salmaan Taseer. The Governor said PPP believed in democracy and contesting election was the constitutional right of every person and political party. He lamented that Punjab government had not yet conducted by-polls, whereas the PPP held elections in Gilgit and Baltistan to end grievances of people in the region. He said it was big achievement of the PPP, which not only won election with majority but also succeeded to get the CM, Speaker and the Deputy Speaker elected unopposed there. He said it was enough to shut the mouths of what he called political actors who were in the bad habit of criticising PPP just for the sake of criticism. Defending President Zardari, the Governor said that it was Asif Ali Zardari who raised slogan of Pakistan Khappy (we need Pakistan) immediately after the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto to save the federation. After the elections, he continued, Asif Zardari formed coalition governments in the Centre and in the provinces despite having majority to form his partys governments. In Punjab, he added, a minority party (PML-N) was given power just for the sake of national reconciliation. He said it was Asif Zardari who induced the PML-N to take part in elections. Salmaan said the credit went to President Zardari for success over NFC award, who showed open-heartedness by enhancing financial powers of the provinces. He (Zardari) is actually Man of the Match and no body else should try to take credit for this, Taseer uttered. Those trying to take credit of consensus over NFC award should know that decisive sixer in this regard was hit by President Zardari, he averred. He said PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari had not landed in the Presidency from air using a Parachute, as he had been elected President by two-third majority of the Parliament and the provincial assemblies. Asif Ali Zardari is Co-chairman of biggest political party in the country, and by virtue of this, his real power is the PPP, he added. Taseer was confident that President Zardari would complete his constitutional term irrespective of how much acting a few political actors do. He said army and the government were on the same boat on all issues including terrorism. PPPs Punjab President, Rana Aftab, General Secretary, Sami Ullah Khan, partys Lahore President, Ch Asghar Gujjar and MPA Sajida Mir also addressed on the occasion. PPPs district presidents and other office bearers attended the function besides a good number of party workers from across the provinces.
