KARACHI - Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that besides coal mining, power generation is essential for the progress and development of the country. Companies working in the mining works with power generation tasks will be encouraged, as the government is keen in power generation. Attending a high level meeting regarding joint venture for Badin coal projects at CM House on Monday afternoon, he said that our country Pakistan particularly the Sindh province was in acute need of electricity which was essential for development and progress of industry and other consumption. He underlined the need to concentrate on implementation of projects with zeal and devotion so that the shortage of power can be met and other allied facilities including job opportunities to youth are fulfilled. Earlier, a detailed report about Power Project for Pakistan was presented by Roadways Pakistan (Pvt) Limited with regard to Badin coal field, Tarai Block (Sindh). It was informed that there are total 275.98 million tones reserves for coal seam No 1,2,3,4 and 5. The total reserves of mine-able coal seams is 212.58 millions tones out of which 151.669 million tones are underground reserves which can last for 60 years with a production of 2.4 million tones per annum. It was informed that a power plant up to 500MW capacity can be generated from coal reserves of the area, as the coal is lignite 'A type with relatively low sulphur and quite suitable for use in power plants. It was informed that at Tarai block, with area of 46km, there is about 80 million ton of mine-able of lignite coal. This location will be able to benefit about 2.5 million tons of coal annually for 60 years, while the coal mining allows running power generation about 600MW. The meeting was informed that in the first stage, 300MW power plant will be built, which will use coal as a final extracted from coal mining. Peter Markasek, commercial Dutch Czech Republic Export Credit Agency, and others presented the details. Regarding social benefits, 500 persons will work on regular employment while 1,000 persons will be provided jobs on contractual basis while in power plants the jobs will be provided on regular and contractual basis. The group also undertake to invest at least 2 per cent (approximately Euros 4.5 million/Rs500 million per year for the life of project which is 30 years) of the total project and hospitals, schools, colleges, technical institutes and other infrastructure like roads, parks and other projects will be developed. Chief Minister, Sindh allowed the group to go ahead and assured that all assistance will be provided for the projects. A committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary (P&D) with Secretary Mines & Mineral Development, Secretary Finance, Secretary Law and Secretary to Chief Minister was also constituted which will finalise various issues & will give its report within one week.
