After having defeated ANP on May 11, 2013 elections Mr. Imran Khan’s party PTI set up a provincial government in KPK. People supported Imran Khan’s party against PPP in all provinces of Pakistan. PML-N was able to win a clear majority in the national assembly, after fourteen years, Mian Nawaz Sharif was elected Prime minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Both persons are true Pakistanis and both have the courage to tackle problems facing our sweet homeland. Imran Khan is a man of principles and so is Mian Nawaz Sharif.
In 1997, on the occasion of Iqbal Day the then PM Nawaz Sharif was the chief guest in Alhambra Art Council, Lahore, he was addressing the gathering when my father rose from his seat and pointed out to Nawaz Sharif the necessity for construction of Kalabagh dam. My father then went on to write a book which has highlighted this.
A conference held in 1948 had forwarded some recommendations which were never followed and should be looked into seriously now. As their recommendations cover a vast field, they require examination by various authorities. Regarding power generation and distribution, the conference had recommended that Pakistan should aim at generating 50,0000KWs in the next five to seven years to meet its requirements of electric power. Both for industrial and other purposes and that the highest priority should be given to the generation of hydroelectric power.
It had also recommended that while the Mianwali hydel project in west Punjab and the Karnafulli project in East Bengal should be taken up immediately and completed within the shortest possible time. The Rohri and Nara canal projects in Sind should also be taken up. As far the calcifies, the conference had recommended that every effort should be made to exploit the present coalmines in a scientific manner and the target of half million per annum of coal should be reached during this year.
Now we are facing acute shortage of electricity due to negligence of our past governments. If this dam is built, flood water may be stored and this water may be used to generate electricity. Had this dam been built, at the right time, we would not be facing an energy crisis today. One thing which could be done to develop consensus to hold a referendum in KPK, Peshawar, Mianwali and other cities of Pakistan.
I request the prime minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan to look into this matter seriously and take drastic steps to construct Kalabagh dam.
AAMIR KAMAL SOOFI,
