RAWALPINDI - Police claimed to have busted a 5-member intra-district gang of dacoits and recovered looted goods, including cash and gold ornaments, besides illegal weapons from their possession.

City Police Officer (CPO) Akhter Umer Hayyat Lalayka, taking notice of rising incidents of robbery and dacoity in the city, constituted a police team headed by SP Saddar Division Arif Shehbaz Khan with other members DSP Malik Ijaz Ahmed and Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Saddar Bairooni Jahangir Bhatti to arrest the criminals. The police team busted the 5-member “Akbara” gang by conducting raids at Chakri Road, Mandi Bahwaldin and Sirae Alamgir. Those arrested included ringleader Akbar alias Akbara, Ali Jibran, Murtaza, Muhammad Nazir, and Ali Aslam The police also recovered cash, gold ornaments, other valuables and illegal weapons including 5 pistols of 30 bore and a 12-bore riffle with 80 bullets.

SP Saddar Division Arif Khan, while talking to media, said that during interrogation, the ringleader confessed that they had looted dozens of houses and citizens on gunpoint. The ringleader Akbar also confessed killing a constable of PS Race Course during firing while fleeing after committing a house robbery in Afshan Colony in month of Ramazan.

The SP claimed that various cases of dacoity and robbery were traced against the gang in different police stations of city. He said that police handed over Akbar to PS Race Course to probe a murder case he involved.

On a query, Arif replied that police recovered 1 kg of Charas and arrested many drug peddlers adding that police also were tightening its noose around the drug peddlers and drug cartel exploding in the division. “At present, the law enforcement agencies are engaged in chalking out a comprehensive security to guard Chehlum procession. But, after passage of the event, raids will be conducted on drug cartels,” the SP said.
