KARACHI - The Sindh government has further amended the Sindh Local Government Act 2013 by giving powers to the revenue officers to make delimitations and merge the union committees of the rural areas in the urban areas.

Acting governor Agha Siraj Durrani promulgated the Sindh local government third amendment ordinance 2013 here on Saturday.

The law will come into force from September 16, said a government handout on Friday.

It may be noted the MQM, the PML-F and other opposition parties have already opposed the amendments in the local government law.

According to amendments in the law, any elected member, who found violating the rules of the LG law, will be disqualified for three years. Moreover, the re-election in a constituency will be held within the three months of the death of a candidate.

The candidates who filed the nominations jointly can apply for the single symbol and they could be declared as the one panel.

Besides, the election of the chairman and vice chairmen of the union councils could be held directly instead of indirect vote.

It is pertinent to mention here the government of Sindh on Friday assured in written about holding the LG elections in the province on January 18 as per the demand of the election commission.

However, the Sindh government is not clear whether it may further amend the LG law to ensure fulfilling the loopholes in the law or not.
