KARACHI - Mehmoodabad police recovered bodies of five premature babies from garbage dump located in Akhtar Colony here on Tuesday.

The bodies were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy as a large number of people watched. The residents of Sector E informed the police about the bodies. Residents condemned the incident and indicated private small maternity homes located in the surrounding area as being responsible for the deaths.

Two of the five bodies were found in a jar while other three were wrapped in plastic shopping bags. All five bodies were girls. Police have started investigation into the discovery and were searching for eyewitnesses. According to sources at JPMC, all the babies were girls and their weights were between 300 to 400 grams and they were all aborted.

Local scavengers going through the garbage everyday said that the bodies were dumped late Monday night as they had not found anything in the morning.

Police surgeon Dr Hamid Padhiar said that the initial medical report showed that one was a newborn baby while others were premature. Faisal Edhi, when contacted, said that an alarming increase in such cases had been seen in the last few years. He also said that most of the aborted babies were girls between the ages of two to five months.

No case was registered till the filing of this story as the police were busy in the legal formalities. The police said that they would register the case on behalf of the state. Inquiry officer Sub-inspector Mohammad Azeem said that the case would be registered after the completion of the medical examination reports.
