A kaleidoscope of colours

ISLAMABAD Yet another exquisite exhibition of paintings, this time by AS Rind, opened at Tanzara Gallery on Thursday. Born in 1960 in Rahimiyar Khan, the artists work is emblematic of the stylized women, jewellery and design of his homeland. Furthermore, Rinds work reflects a strong cultural influence of his area shown by the regional aesthetics, splendour, shades and motifs in his paintings. The magnificent array of colours and the striking patterns contribute to this reflection, bringing pictorial richness to his work. Rind has been painting since 1988 and worked in super realism till 1993. After this he started impressionism, cubism as well as an abstract style of painting. His uplifting colour palette and precise and detailed brush work successfully depict the beauty of his homeland, particularly the women who have inspired the artist to commemorate them through his paintings. The native women with their pouted lips, wide eyes and ethnic long necks are elegantly bedecked with striking earrings typical of the desert culture. Moreover, the presence of the parrot or the rose in his paintings creates an aura of romance and mystery, further embellishing the charm of these women. He occasionally uses verses of the great revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz to contribute to the romantic and esoteric atmosphere of his paintings, further enhancing the interest of the spectators. His favourite medium is acrylic on canvas but also on display are some striking charcoal drawings which add variety to the exhibit. The vibrancy of his work and his ability to evoke refreshing sensations of vivacity and liveliness, as revealed by this exhibition, is what sets him apart from his contemporaries. The exhibition will continue till the 24th of January at Tanzara Gallery (House 14, Street 12, F-7/2).
