A recent report in the media regarding, at least 1400 political appointments in Sindh police is worrisome. These appointments were made for the 1900 vacant constable seats in Karachi. It just goes on to prove that, we have learned nothing from our past experiences. Karachi is a city that is already marred with political, religious and ethnic violence. On top of all this, the already beleaguered police force is being subjected to political based hiring. It should be realized that politics is presenting the greatest hindrance in the effectiveness of the police force, in controlling the law and order situation. It is imperative that the institution should be cleared of political elements, so it can perform efficiently. YAHYA AHMAD, Islamabad, January 14.
