CHINIOT - Water supplied to residents of District Chiniot is unsafe for human consumption and causing hepatitis C, diarrhoea, gastroenteritis and other diseases, revealed a survey report issued here.

The Public Welfare Society, a non-government organisation (NGO), in connection with Human Rights Day, arranged a seminar titled “Safe and clean drinking water.”

Earlier, the NGO conducted a study on the status of drinking water in different areas of District Chiniot at the union council level particularly villages on the both side of River Chenab.

During the survey carried out in different areas of the district, condition and effects of poor quality of water supplied by public departments were examined.

In the light of the findings of the survey, it transpired that the water being supplied to the community was not only unsafe for drinking purposes but was also the main reason behind the prevalence of hepatitis C, diarrhoea, gastroenteritis and other diseases.

Addressing the participants of the seminar, the representative of Public Welfare Society Organisation said that provision of drinking water was the basic duty of the government towards citizens.

“We have huge water resources but the government is doing nothing to make them clean and supply potable water. The industrial waste is the main pollutant with which the drinking water gets contaminated,” he added.

He said that according to survey report, the water being used in district Chiniot for drinking purposes was highly polluted. He said residents of the city had been drinking this water for long and becoming victims of hepatic and gastric diseases. One of the reasons behind the provision of polluted water was negligence of the TMA.

Owing to the this negligence underground sewerage and pipeline burst after every now and then mixing pure and contaminated it is interesting to note that dirty water of the city and sewerage following in Rive Chenab on many places particularly Chiniot sewerage water going into Chenab, which the citizen drink unknowing and fall prey to hazardous diseased, he said. He said that the TMA also ignore the solution of filter plant in the city. He said the pure health facilities were other factors worsening the miserable condition of the inhabitant of Chiniot.
