PESHAWAR – Security forces on Saturday quelled a militant attack on the office of District Police Officer (DPO) in Dera Ismail Khan in which eight people including four terrorists and two policemen were killed and seven cops were injured.
Sources said one of the suicide attackers blew himself up on the premises of the DPO office when he was encircled by the security personnel.
The militants first attacked the office with rockets and then hurled hand grenades to make their entry into the office which is surrounded by several sensitive buildings and district courts. Three suicide bombers blew themselves up and one was reportedly killed by forces when police, FC and other security officials surrounded the building. The exchange of fire also took place.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Iftikhar Hussain told media men that two suicide bombers were gunned down by the police while another one blew himself up. He said the militants entered the office through main gate in the garb of police officials.
The minister said DPO Khalid Sohail remained unhurt and was taken out of the office by security forces. According to the police, the militants also hurled three hand grenades at the DPO office.
Iftikhar said the attack was a reaction to the police operation against militants in the province. The militants were targeting police installations in a bid to demoralise the police force. However, the morale of police force was getting stronger with each day, he added. After the blast, police and security forces rushed to the site and cordoned of the entire area and conducted search operation.
According to Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Akbar Hoti, the operation was completed in three hours which claimed five lives including two policemen and three terrorists. He said the attackers were armed with automatic weapons, rocket launchers and hand grenades.
