LAHORE - An election tribunal yesterday disqualified a Punjab Assembly member of PML-N from PP-78, Jhang, Rashida Yaqoob Sheikh, for concealing facts and having secret assets.

Rashida Yaqoob Sheikh’s counsel could not convince the court over charges of dishonesty against her. The tribunal judge held she concealed facts from the court and hid her assets she possessed before applying for contesting election from PP-78, Jhang. The tribunal judge ordered Election Commission of Pakistan to hold by-election within 90 days on the vacant seat of the provincial assembly.

The disqualification of the MPA is another setback to the ruling party as its two MNAs, Khawaja Saad Rafiq and Siddique Khan Baloch, have already been declared disqualified on the charges of rigging and dishonesty. Khawaja Saad Rafiq is, however, still holding the assembly representation after the Supreme Court granted him stay against the tribunal decision while Siddique Khan lost the by-polls to PTI leader Jahangir Khan Tareen.

Maulana Ahmad Ludhyanvi had filed the petition, alleging Rashida Yaqoob’s election was illegal and unlawful as she did not show her assets to the Election Commission of Pakistan. He also alleged she was dishonest and did not meet the conditions of articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. He prayed to the court to disqualify her and announce by-election.
