Amin Suleiman in his letter (The Nation July 01) has persisted with the view that the coalition government should shift its attention from the judges' issue and concentrate on problems being faced by the people. Most ills in the society, like smuggling, hoarding, profiteering etc. are caused by people with 'connections' that make them immune from accountability. It is only an independent judiciary that can break the nexus between the anti-social elements and the officialdom. Only by attacking the root cause of the problem can we ensure the quality, quantity and availability of goods at affordable prices. There are no other short cuts available to the government otherwise the situation would have improved by now. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore Cantt., via e-mail, July 1.
