Punjab dissociates itself from petitionagainst Hafiz Saeed

ISLAMABAD - The Punjab government on Tuesday dissociated itself from Hafiz Saeed case when it filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking withdrawal of the case on the ground that the federal government had failed to provide solid evidences for pursuing the matter further. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice was hearing two identical petitions filed by the federal and Punjab governments against the release of Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief by the Lahore High Court. Advocate General Punjab Raza Farooq submitted before the court that the government of Punjab had put Hafiz Saeed under house arrest on the directives of the federal government. He said that the Punjab government had provided whatever evidences it had but the federal government failed to cooperate further in this regard. Earlier, AG Punjab filed a petition in the court seeking withdrawal of the case saying that the government of Punjab had challenged the Lahore High Courts verdict on the directives of the federal government but the later failed to provide solid evidences on the basis of which the former could pursue the case further. AK Dogar Advocate, Counsel for the Hafiz Saeed, contended that the court orders for putting Hafiz Saeed under house arrest were issued by the Punjab government and that the petitions became anfractuous after the withdrawal of Punjab government. Deputy Attorney General Shah Khawar contended that evidences have been collected against the Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief and his associates and the consultations were underway with the Punjab government in this regard. He also sought more time from the court for consultation after that the case was adjourned till July 16.
