Zardari's diplomatic endeavours

President Asif Ali Zardaris policy of reconciliation and harmony at home and abroad has paid rich dividends. Such a policy which was never heard of in the political battle field of Pakistani politics before provided a level playing field to each and every political party and has given chances to each of the four provincial governments and the federal government to chart out welfare oriented policies and maximise benefits for the people at an economically difficult time. His decision to restore the judiciary was a reflection of his sagacity and large-heartedness in the larger interest of the country. It was indeed his victory and not defeat as some diplomacy like politics is an art of the impossible and Presidents every visit has succeeded in achieving what once looked impossible. The critics of president Zardaris diplomatic endeavours have tried to paint a negative picture of his every visit that he undertook since becoming the head of this state. They have arrogantly refused to accept that the president has done better by leading from the front on diplomatic stage than what his foreign minister could do. He cast aside the sabre-rattling style of diplomacy and chose a pa from where he could maximise the benefits for Pakistan. In diplomacy one concedes a step to gain too and thats how the president has moved in the interest of Pakistan. He has buried deep the prejudiced theory that he lacks education in sensitive diplomacy by taking pragmatic and practical steps that have yielded go d results for Pakistan. His Washington visit which some critics sarcastically described as Yatra was a successful one no matter how his opponents describe it. .he success of his visit could be judged by the fact that he succeeded in getting/unconditional support from the USA for Pakistans economic concerns and its fight for survival against the militants who had turned their guns on the Pakistanis in the name of Islam. It made secretary of state Ms. Hillary Clinton accept the fact that America had wronged Pakistan over the years after the Afghan Jihad. President Zardari was the first Pakistani head of state to make a historical visit to Libya after Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in three decades. Equally important are the visits of president Zardari to China which is a time tested friend of Pakistan and has pledged to provide economic and diplomatic support in this hour of need. China has also shown interest in helping Pakistan in harnessing its huge reserves of coal into energy. Another significant visit of the president was to Iran where he signed the long awaited Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline. His latest visit to European Union headquarters in Brussels was yet another success. Pakistan got huge commitment from the EU countries for the rehabilitation of the IDPs. Yes Pakistan needed trade concessions from the EU but at a time when the entire world particularly Europe is experiencing worst kind of economic meltdown it was difficult even for the friendly EU countries to provide succour to Pakistan. But the request has been noted with a solemn promise that when economic conditions improve EU countries would be the first to give Pakistan a helping hand. But the biggest positive of his reconciliation and harmony-based policy abroad is the softening of Indias anti-Pakistan stance on Mumbai attacks. The 23/11 attack in Mumbai brought the two neighbours to the edge but it {vas a string of astute statements that slowly doused the fire of retaliation in the Indian mindset.
