Rs20m projects completed ..... on papers

LAHORE- A contractor of the Punjab government has allegedly completed seven development projects worth Rs20 million in papers, sources informed The Nation on Wednesday. The sources informed that the Provincial government allocated a huge amount for the construction of Main Kot Khawaja Saeed Road and six other development projects in the area including the construction of some artilleries and streets on the recommendation of Member National Assembly Pervez Malik who was elected from the constituency 123 in by-elections. Though such projects were approved on the recommendations of Pervez Malik but he assigned the area MPA Chaudhry Shahbaz to monitor these development projects. MPA Chaudhry Shahbaz contacted the contractor and directed him to complete such projects on urgent basis and after a short period the contractor told the MPA that these projects have been completed. Ch Shahbaz however did not inspect such roads and streets before claiming completion of projects. The MPA then directed his political supporters to display banners in the concerned area in order to appreciate efforts and services made by him for the completion of such projects on demand of his voters, the sources said. Later, the residents of the area informed the MPA that all these projects were still pending and the contract company could not start even development process. On which the MPA again contacted the contractor and taunted him over misguidance. However, the contractor said the company had accomplished the projects. Residents of the area told this scribe that the contractor started patched work on dilapidated parts of the road and streets and then disappeared. They said the material used for filling the decayed parts of such roads also washed away with the rainwater. They said these roads and streets are among some important roads of northern part of City, which link some major important roads and surroundings including Chah Miran Road, Shadbagh, Sher Shah Road, Gujjarpura Road and Baghbanpura Road. Iftikhar Ahmed, a supporter and close friend of Chaudhry Shahbaz MPA said the elected representatives of area have failed to address the grievances of the locality as they are minting money in connivance with the contractors and could not start any public welfare project. He said that in fact, the MPA was personally against the construction of Main Kot Khawaja Saeed Road because residences of his political rival are situated on the road. When contacted, Pervaiz Malik talking to The Nation said that construction work of such road was halted due to delay in releasing allocated funds by the provincial government. He denied that the projects have been completed in files and said that these were still in the list of ongoing projects. He further admitted that there are a lot of issues in his constituency, which were not addressed by any government or by the elected representatives of the constituency as they always ignored problems faced by the people of the area. He said that it was fact that billions of rupees were required for resolving the problems of such constituency. However, he claimed that PML-N government is committed to resolve the problems of the masses and in this regard a number of development projects are underway including construction of a sports stadium. He said that Punjab government allocated Rs5 billion for the patchwork of Jamil Shaheed Road only and Rs350 million for the Bhogiwal Road sewerage pipeline.
