At the hearing of identical petitions against some of the provisions of the 18th amendment here at the Supreme Court, arguments and remarks were given on the spirit and basic structure of the Constitution with regard to introducing amendments in it. Abdul Hafeez Pirzada continued giving arguments against the provisions in the 18th amendment at the hearing carried out by 17-judge larger bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. He said the Supreme Court is competent to declare any amendment void that stands in violation of the basic structure of the Constitution.
