ISLAMABAD Pakistani cricket team is all set to play the opening match of the Asia Cup tournament against the defending champion and host Sri Lanka today. Although the morale of Sri Lankans is sky-high after winning the triangular series in Zimbabwe, besides having the home advantage, yet they are very much beatable as they were beaten by both India and Zimbabwe in the league matches of the triangular series. Pakistani team is a balanced one with a blend of youth and experience. We have got in our ranks master blasters such as Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal who have the potential to turn the game in our favour. The bowling department is also very strong as it has always been the main strength of our team and now it has gained a boost with the inclusion of Shoaib Akhtar. Muhammad Aamir has proved himself as the main strike bowler and he can perform at every level of the game, as the recently concluded World T/20 is a true example of his talent and ability. Muhammad Asif is still a match winning bowler and so is Saeed Ajmal who, despite being badly treated by the Australians in the World T/20, can turn the whole situation of the match with his off spin and special one Doosra. This Asia Cup will also be the test case of Shahid Afridis ability as skipper. Any wrong decision by the Captain in this event can prove costly. The best form of defence is to attack and the team must go for all-out attack against all opponents. If we play to the best of our potential and like a combined unit, no team in the world can beat us. There are a few newcomers in the side to whom a chance must be given as the tour of England is around the corner and after England, Pakistan will play a series against the mighty Aussies in England as the Australians are not ready to tour Pakistan due to security concerns. Afridi can learn from his past mistakes and should not repeat them. He should open the innings along with Slaman Butt and this can ease the pressure from the batsmen to follow. Afridi should change his style of batting that needs more patience. As the Skipper of the team he is supposed to lead from the front, which he is fully capable to do by spending more time at the crease. As long as he stays at the crease, his confidence will grow further and the run rate and scoreboard will move swiftly.
