PPP, MQM love-hate drags on

KARACHI The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Monday agreed to continue the process of political reconciliation according to the vision of their brass, sources said. Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad Khan called on President Asif Ali Zardari in the Bilawal House, Karachi, Monday night. Interior Minister Rehman Malik and presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar were also present in the meeting called to remove the grievances of the MQM. Briefing journalists, Farhatullah Babar said that the meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere. Interior Minister Rehman Malik gave a briefing on his recent meeting with MQM chief Altaf Hussain in London. The meeting reiterated the process of political reconciliation would continue for political stability, welfare of the people and for resolving problems facing the country. It was also resolved that all issues would be addressed in the spirit of mutual accommodation and in accordance with the mission of the leaders of the two parties, Farhatullah added. He said it was also agreed that in the larger interest of the country and the people strict, indiscriminate action will be taken against all criminals and no one would be allowed to seek shelter behind a political facade. A delegation of the MQM was due to meet President Zardari at the Bilawal House, but the meeting was postponed again over unexplained reasons. Source said a crucial meeting of the MQM Rabita Committee is expected on Tuesday (today) after the briefing by Interior Minister Rehman Malik to President Asif Ali Zardari about his meeting with MQM chief Altaf Hussain in London. Rehman Malik reached the metropolis to join the meeting of Governor Ebad and President Zardari. Sources said the meeting of the MQM Rabita Committee delegation with President Asif Ali Zardari is now expected to take place Tuesday (today). MQM Rabita Committee senior member Wasey Jalil told The Nation that the Rabita Committee has already informed President Zardari about MQMs concerns, saying now the ball is in his court. He however said that no meeting had been scheduled with President Zardari in Karachi for Tuesday. Its up to the PPP to organise meetings and give a definite answer about MQMs concerns. It may be noted here that the MQM delegation expressed their concerns to President Zardari last week in a meeting in Islamabad over the unrest prevailing Karachi. The MQM expressed serious reservations over the law and order situation in Karachi and an increase in the incidents of extortion and kidnapping for ransom, for which the MQM blamed Lyari gangsters. The recent controversy emerged between the two parties after a statement by Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza declared the Peoples Amn Committee as a sub-organisation of the PPP. However, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, in his meeting in London, assured MQM chief Altaf Hussain that all legitimate grievances of his party would be addressed at the earliest. Separately, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Rehman Malik Monday discussed overall political situation in the country, particularly in backdrop of the meeting of the latter with Altaf Hussain in London. Sources said that the PPP is playing its cards quite smartly and when it saw that Altaf Hussain was not giving time to Malik, the meetings of President Asif Ali Zardari with Governor Ebad and the MQM delegation scheduled for Sunday were also put off and it was said that the meetings were deferred owing to the other pressing engagements of President Zardari. The moment the meetings of President Zardari with Governor Ebad and later with MQM delegation were deferred for the day, MQM chief Altaf Hussain gave time to Malik. Sources further said the PPP dinner meeting with PML-Q leaders a few days back was also aimed at releasing the mounting pressure of MQM on the government and it worked well, as Altaf rushed to talk with PML-Q chief Ch Shujaat Hussain to have some know of the PPP-PML-Q meeting. The statements of Ch Shujaat and other Q-leaguers following their dinner with President Zardari that they would not let the incumbent political dispensation fall had poured water on the MQM plans and now they have to redefine their strategy in the changed scenario, as they wanted to get their demands met but at the same time they did not afford to completely get off the governments back. The sources further said that by taking the Q-League on board or giving this impression the Pakistan Peoples Party was achieving multiple benefits as on the one hand they had managed to reduce the growing MQM pressure on the government for acceptance of their demands while on the other they were trying to tame the PML-N which had thrown them out of the Punjab government in the recent past and could bring them on their knees at the Centre. The statement of Shujaat has given the PPP a breathing space and that was the reason the PPP leadership seemed quite relaxed in the upcoming negotiations with the MQM. Sources in the PPP said that in the given situation, President Asif Zardari would unlikely concede much to the MQM, as he knew well the shortcomings and limitations of the MQM, which at this critical juncture would not afford to fully dissociate itself from the government. Sources further said that it was now expected that the MQM would forego some of its demands, including immediate removal of Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza from his post, and would try to get some other key demands met, including the one relating to the fate and future of the local government system in the province.
