HAFIZABAD - Special Assistant to Punjab Chief Minister for Food Manshaullah Butt said that neither any excesses with farmers nor corruption would be tolerated at the wheat procurement centres.

He said that the Punjab chief minister had already directed all the officials concerned to ensure protection of growers’ rights and ensure respect of them the centres. He was talking to the media and representative of farmers at the Circuit House Hafizabad.

Secretary Food Arfan Ali, Punjab Parliamentary Secretary for Energy Assadullah, District Coordination Officer Muhammad Asif and other concerned officer were present. He said that farmers have to trust on Almighty Allah after sowing seeds so protection of growers’ rights was the top priority of the Punjab government.

He said that the chief minister had taken a strict notice of the incident of torture upon growers in Jalalpur Bhattian and made it clear that effective measures should be taken to avoid such incidents in the future.

He said that the district Government as well as Passco will ensure discipline at all procurement centres. He declared that the Punjab government would not tolerate corruption in issuing gunny bags and mismanagement at the centres at all costs.

To a question, he said that this year the Punjab government had fixed procurement target of 3.5 million metric tones of wheat, adding that 374 procurement centres had been established across the province for this purpose. The secretary food said that this year 17 million tones of wheat production was expected from the Punjab and gunny bags for procurement of 1.4 million metric tones of wheat have been distributed to farmers.

He said that strict action would be taken against the persons involved in torturing growers at procurement centre and exemplary punishment would be awarded to guilty officials.
